Report: Giants ink former first-rounder McDougle

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Unable to coax Michael Strahan out of retirement, the New York Giants have reportedly added recently cut defensive end Jerome McDougle, formerly of division rival Philadelphia.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported Sunday that the Giants had come to terms on a one-year, $1 million deal with the former first-round pick out of Miami- Florida.

The Eagles traded up 15 spots to take McDougle 15th overall in 2003, but the former Hurricanes star has had injury problems, and has been a bust when healthy.

McDougle has just three sacks in 33 career games, but had 2 1/2 this preseason for Philadelphia. The Giants must cut one player to get back down to 53 before officially adding McDougle.

The 29-year-old McDougle will try to add some defensive line depth for the Giants, who have lost Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora for the season.

Umenyiora suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee during a preseason game against the New York Jets, and recently retired defensive end Michael Strahan reportedly declined the Giants' offer to bring him back for one more season.
